Garni Armenia

Garni and Geghard Excursion

Hotel Meeting with the Guide: Departure for a day in Armenia to discover Garni, Symphony of Stones, Gerghard Monastery, with a masterclass and tasting of Lavash, a typical Armenian bread. We’ll start the excursion with a visit to Garni, located about 30 km from Yerevan. We’ll visit this fascinating center of Hellenistic and Roman culture, an ancient residence of the Armenian kings of the Arshakuni Dynasty. During the visit, we’ll explore the Temple dedicated to the Sun God, a wonderful example of Greek architecture dating back to the 1st century AD, known for its extraordinary beauty and historical significance. We’ll also admire the remnants of the wall dating back to the 3rd century BC, witnesses of Garni’s past grandeur, and the fascinating Roman Baths, offering a glimpse into the daily life of ancient Armenians. This journey will allow us to immerse ourselves in the rich history and culture of the region. Symphony of Stones: The Garni Gorge is indeed one of the most extraordinary places in Armenia, known for its natural beauty and unique geological formations. The “basalt organ” is a natural wonder that amazes with its extraordinary symmetry and basalt columns, resembling the pipes of a musical organ, creating a fascinating landscape. This gorge was formed millions of years ago as a result of volcanic activity followed by erosion processes, making it not only a place of great beauty but also of scientific interest. Visitors can admire not only the imposing basalt columns but also the entire gorge, which offers spectacular views and unique photographic opportunities. Preparation of Lavash: Afterward, we’ll visit a local house where you’ll have the opportunity to see and participate in the preparation of Armenian Lavash bread (Lavash is a very thin Armenian bread, usually sold in very large shapes. It’s also an ancient bread baked in an underground oven, “tonir”). In 2015, Lavash was inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Geghard Monastery: The Geghard Monastery is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating places in Armenia. Its location in a deep canyon, surrounded by imposing rocky walls, creates a truly mystical atmosphere, perfect for spiritual reflection and contemplation. The history of the monastery, dating back to the 4th century, is intrinsically linked to the Armenian Christian tradition. Its name, “Geghard,” means “spear” and refers to the spear that, according to tradition, pierced Christ’s body. The rock-carved architecture of the monastery is extraordinary: many of the churches and chapels were directly carved into the rock, showcasing the incredible skill and creativity of Armenian artisans. Being a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Geghard Monastery is protected for its historical and cultural importance, making it a place of great interest not only for pilgrims but also for tourists and scholars. The visit to Geghard offers a unique opportunity to explore Armenia’s rich spiritual heritage and immerse oneself in the surrounding natural beauty.
